Two people were hospitalized Thursday following a two-car crash in Riverhead on Route 58, Riverhead Town police said.
Heavy rescue efforts were required after the vehicles collided shortly before 6:30 p.m. near the Target shopping center, police said.
The driver and passenger of one of the vehicles suffered non-life threatening injuries, police said.
At around 7 p.m., police at the scene confirmed one victim was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center and the other was either going to be taken to same same hospital or transported by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Stony Brook University Hospital.
The driver and passenger of the second vehicle weren’t taken to the hospital, police said.
The Riverhead Fire Department also responded to the scene and a portion of Route 58 was closed during the rescue efforts.

One person was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital following a two-vehicle crash in Flanders, Southampton Town police said.
A pickup truck and a minivan collided near the intersection of Route 24 and Pleasure Drive at around 6:45 p.m., police said.
The driver of the pickup truck was airlifted to the hospital, police said.
A portion of Route 24 was closed during the rescue efforts.
No other details were immediately available.

UPDATE, TUESDAY 10:45 A.M.: Police said the operator of a dirt bike in last night’s accident was issued three citations following the accident.
According to police, the driver of the dirt bike — Deandre King, 19 — was riding the vehicle southbound on Harrison Avenue when he ran a red light. He was subsequently hit by two different cars that both had green lights and were driving through the intersection at the time.

A woman was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center after being injured in an accident in Calverton Thursday, Riverhead fire department officials said at the scene.
A woman was driving alone in a white sedan at around 4 p.m. when her vehicle collided with a transit bus on River Road after she exited Kent Animal Shelter, fire chief Joseph Raynor said.

A pick-up truck flipped after colliding with another vehicle near the intersection of Route 58 and Northville Turnpike Monday night, Riverhead Town police at the scene said.
The accident occurred after 9 p.m. and no injuries were reported, police said.
The Chevy pick-up truck was towed and the driver of the other vehicle drove away following the police investigation, officials said.
Police said no traffic violations were issued.
