Hart’s Hardware is a family-run store that has provided its customers with quality hardware and household items since 1996. The store has been in the same location since before the 1960s, when the Smith brothers used it as a storeroom for their building supplies. Les Hart opened it as a hardware store, then Don Spates ran it, then Bill Goodale, now deceased, became the owner and ran it for 10 years. Though he died in 2006, his wife, Karen, and his daughter, Lisa, have kept the store running and have even managed to expand it.

Nuts, bolts, keys, screens, paint, and a full line of electrical and plumbing supplies are some of the many items at Hart’s Hardware. Services such as glass-cutting are also available to customers.

“A local place with local people, Hart’s is a true small-town hardware store,” Ms. Jerome said. “We have ties to the community, we live and work in this town and can be seen at the market or school.”

Maritime Day School was founded in 2008 by two local women who sought to provide a high-quality pre-school program and to make a difference in children’s lives. It offers “a unique education experience” for children ages two, three and four, according to its new owner, Dawn L. Ward.

“It is for families seeking a new direction in their child’s preschool years,” she said. “Notwithstanding our students’ tender ages, we put forth a unique theme-based curriculum which provides a solid foundation for learning. We also seek to provide cutting edge learning tools such as the interactive Smart Board which is being installed in our 4-year-old class, and new educational materials purchased for the 2- and 3-year-old classes.”

Maritime Day School offers a seven week summer program that is both educational and fun. “We believe summer camp should be intriguing and fun, while accomplishing our core goal, education,” said Ms. Ward. The program runs Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon.

Each weekly theme incorporates a daily art activity, math, language, social studies, singing, literature and science, and all involve a lot of fun and exploration. The children also have the opportunity to get wet and be silly. The first week the classes “traveled” to Egypt to see the great pyramids and learn about Egyptian hieroglyphs. This summer’s lineup includes “Walk like an Egyptian;” “Hang Ten” Beach; “Wizards;” “There’s A Snake In My Boot;” “Wild West;”  “Under the Big Top Circus,” “Knights and Princesses,” and “Do You Have What It Takes?” Survivor.

“Our priority is to provide children with a fun and rewarding summer experience, supervised by educated and seasoned teachers,” said Ms. Ward. “In addition to their extensive experience, all teachers and staff are certified in CPR and First Aid.”

Summer Camp provides children who have never experienced a preschool setting with an opportunity for routine and peer interaction. For children who have previously attended preschool, it provides consistency and maintenance, which can contribute to their success in the following school year. “We can ensure you that your child will be learning while creating summer memories,” said Ms. Ward.

For September enrollment, Maritime offers two daily sessions: 9 a.m. to noon, and 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Hayground School was founded in 1996 on the conviction that all children can and should live a life of the mind, that all children can be serious and passionate readers who are able to engage in serious discourse, that all children can work and study in a community where art is at the center, not the periphery, of life, and where they can develop the habit of compassion.
Hayground School’s mission is to provide an open community school where conventional teaching methods are replaced by new ways of teaching and learning, a program of innovation in a community of diversity, both economical and cultural.
Hayground offers a nine-week summer camp for a diverse group of kids ages 3 to 13. “Hayground is a camp that kids would invent if they could,” said its founding director, Jon Snow. “The kids have lots of time and choices to help them discover what they love to do. We have 400 kids from all over the world,” said Mr. Snow, “as well as kids from New York City and California and points in between.” 
The camp offers all the traditional sports and some non-traditional ones, including “boo yeah,” a game that involves a huge ball held aloft and lots of friendly competition. There is a special chess camp taught by a Serbian chess master.
“We have a big gardening and cooking program,” said Mr. Snow, “where the kids grow and harvest vegetables and then cook them. There are always lots of good things from the garden for the kids to eat,” he said. “They even grow produce for the local food pantry, and the camp has a special farmers market every Friday from 3 to 6:30 p.m., where the community is welcome to purchase what the kids have grown,” he said.
Hayground camp offers musical residencies to professional musicians, and this summer welcomes The Hot 8 Brass Band from New Orleans, which was recently featured on the HBO series “Treme.” “The kids have an opportunity to interact with top musicians from all over the world,” said Mr. Snow. “We also have a capoeira dance group from Brazil this summer,” he said. Also on the roster are two Ph.D. research scientists who call themselves the Brooklyn Aerodrome, who will engage the kids in making small planes out of recycled materials that will actually fly. “We also have A&G Hip Hop Dance,” said Mr. Snow, “who will be doing flash mobs with the kids.” The camp even has a flying trapeze every year, where the kids learn to perform like aerialists.
