Two people were arrested on drunken driving charges at sobriety checkpoints set up in Riverhead Town Saturday, Riverhead Town police said.
Police were assisted by members of the district attorney’s East End DWI Task Force with patrolling, officials said.
The following people were arrested and charged with DWI:
• Bladimir Franco, Riverhead
• Roque Estrada, Flanders
Police said they anticipated running more checkpoints in 2014.
A 48-year-old man from Australia was arrested early Sunday morning on drunken driving charges in Laurel, Southold Town police said.
Francis O’Toole was driving a 2001 Chevrolet westbound on Route 25 just before 1 a.m. when police observed him speeding, officials said.
After he was pulled over, police say they found him to be intoxicated.
Mr. O’Toole was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and speeding, police said.
He was transported to police headquarters, processed and held overnight for arraignment, officials said.
A 29-year-old Wheatley Heights woman was arrested on drug charges after she was stopped by police on Flanders Road in Flanders early Sunday morning, Southampton Town police said.
A Flanders man who was stopped by police for failing to maintain his lane of travel along Flanders Road early Saturday morning is facing DWI and unlicensed operation charges, Southampton Town Police said.
Elder H. Ponce Ortega, 31, was stopped shortly after 2 a.m. at the intersection of Donald Avenue, police said. It was determined that he was driving drunk and without a license, police said.
He was transported to police headquarters and held for arraignment, police said.
A 26-year-old Flanders man was charged with misdemeanor driving while intoxicated Friday night, Southampton Town police said. (more…)

East End law enforcement agencies joined Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota Tuesday afternoon to unveil a plan to bolster sobriety checkpoints on land and at sea this summer.
The East End DWI Task Force will conduct additional checkpoints aimed at cracking down on drunken an drug impaired drivers and boaters, Mr. Spota announced during a press conference at the U.S. Coast Guard station in Hampton Bays.
A 32-year-old Flanders man who ran a stop sign was charged with driving while intoxicated Sunday night, according to Southampton Town Police.
Edwin Espanasola was pulled over after an officer saw him running a stop sign at the intersection of Priscilla Avenue and Woodroad Trail in Flanders at about 8:20 p.m., according to police.
Mr. Espanasola had alcohol on his breath, slurred speech and other signs of intoxication, police said.
He also performed badly on field sobriety tests and had registered at .08 on a pre-screen breath test, according to police.
He was charged with driving while intoxicated, unlicensed operation and failure to stop at a stop sign.
