The sun was out, the pollen count was down and Eric Cunha’s bright mood matched the conditions.

As compared to the first day of the Section XI boys track and field division championships two days earlier, which featured driving rain and chilly temperatures, Wednesday was a treat. No rain. Not too hot. Not too cold.

Just right.

Eric Cunha’s reaction to waking up Monday morning with his allergies bothering him and then hearing about rain in the forecast for later in the day could be summed up in one word: ugh!

The Riverhead High School senior hoped the inclement weather would lead to a postponement of the Section XI Division Championships, but it wasn’t to be. Like it or not, Cunha had a race to run, and he wasn’t exactly thrilled.

Talk about hitting the ground running. Eric Cunha ran and ran and ran — and then he ran some more.

Cunha wasn’t allowed the luxury of easing gently into the spring season. In his first track and field meet since competing in a national indoor meet in March, the Riverhead High School senior ran in four events — totaling four miles — and walked away a winner in each of them Wednesday.

It was an eventful two days for Eric Cunha. The senior on the Riverhead High School boys winter track team broke a school record and became a league champion, all within a span of 48 hours.

Cunha broke the school record in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2 minutes, 34.22 seconds in the New Balance Games at The Armory in New York City on Saturday. The previous mark of 2:34.59 was set by Luke Coulter last year.
