“For everybody to get up here and say the same things over and over again is ridiculous.”

So said Mike Brewer, a former president of the Flanders, Riverside, and Northampton Community Association at Friday night’s public informational meeting about a garbage district that has been proposed in the three hamlets.

Mr. Brewer said at the meeting that he’s unsure where he lies on the proposal, but said residents should let it go to a public vote.

But Mr. Brewer found himself in the minority on Friday night, where most of the 30 or so people who spoke at the meeting already had their minds made up. They were opposed to the idea, though some did support the proposal.

The Riverhead Town Board is expected to discuss rebidding its residential garbage collection district, which has been in place since 1991.  The cost of the district, currently at $274 per year for a single-family home, was reduced drastically when the town rebid the district about three years ago.

Southampton Town will be holding an informational meeting on its proposal to create a garbage district in the Flanders, Riverside and Northampton hamlets on Friday, May 15, at 7 p.m. in the Phillips Avenue Elementary School. (more…)

If a controversial proposed garbage district in Flanders, Riverside and Northampton is going forward, the town will likely need to first re-bid it, according to Councilman Brad Bender of Northampton.

But that’s assuming the district is even moving forward, a decision that the Town Board will likely make some time after a public hearing on the proposal in mid-May, he said. (more…)

Nearly 20 years ago, a News-Review article about Riverhead Town’s decision to create a townwide garbage pickup program started with the following sentence: “There are two sides to every garbage story.”

A proposal to institute a garbage district in the hamlets of Flanders, Riverside and Northampton will be discussed before the Waters Edge Civic Association at 7 p.m. Friday at the Crohan Community Center in Flanders.

Christine Fetten, Southampton Town’s Director of Municipal Works, will be the speaker.

The proposal would have to be approved by property owners within the proposed district before it could take effect. Town officials have yet to determine when that vote would be.  (more…)
