Update (1 a.m. Thursday): Two men were arrested in connection with Wednesday’s shooting in Flanders, according to a Southampton Police press release.
Kwame Opoku, 32, of Mastic Beach was charged with first-degree assault, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, second-degree criminal use of a firearm, and first-degree reckless endangerment, police said. (more…)

A Manorville man who pleaded guilty to armed robbery in connection with a string of robberies across Suffolk County — including one in Calverton and Mattituck — was sentenced to five years in prison Monday, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. (more…)

Riverhead Town’s Justice Court isn’t as safe as it should be, elected town officials say.
They maintain that the hallways in the Howell Avenue building — which also serves as police department headquarters — aren’t wide enough and that the courtroom is too close to the building’s entrance.
“It’s very tight up there,” said Police Chief David Hegermiller. “It’s very confined quarters. It’s very makeshift.” (more…)

Social networking giant Facebook has vowed to help put a stop to illegal gun sales initiating on its social media sites, officials announced at a press conference Wednesday.
Facebook, which also owns the picture sharing platform Instagram, has agreed to remove posts by users who are trying to skirt gun laws and sell firearms illegally, said Monika Bickert, Facebook’s head of global policy management. (more…)

Suffolk County is one of 17 counties across New York that will be able to compete for $13 million in state grants to reduce gun violence, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Tuesday.
A Laurel man was arrested Sunday for shooting an air rifle at another man, striking him in the face and causing a “large laceration,” Southold Town Police said.
Brayan Cahueque, 23, fired the shot at a man police described as “a 23-year-old Hispanic male,” during an altercation about 4 a.m. at 1345 Main Road in Laurel, police said.
Mr. Cahueque was arrested and charged with second degree assault. He is being held at Southold Police Headquarters until his arraignment Monday morning in Southold Town Justice Court.
Police said they are holding the weapon as evidence.
The victim was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment of his injury, police said.
