CLASS A FIRST ROUND | GOLDEN FLASHES 53, WILDCATS 51
In the two weeks his team was off since the regular season ended, Shoreham-Wading River coach Kevin Culhane did his best to keep the players loose before Tuesday night’s Class A playoff opener. On Saturday, the Wildcats played crisp in a scrimmage against Bellport, a playoff-bound Class AA team.

The banners that hang in the gym at Shoreham-Wading River High School represent each sport in the school. Some banners, like for girls track, are stuffed with years showcasing the titles won.
For boys basketball, the banner lists just two years: 1990 and 1992, both league titles. (more…)

WILDCATS 47, WARRIORS 45
As Amityville guard Rae Toppin caught a pass on the baseline, with the court seemingly all to himself, everyone inside the Shoreham-Wading River High School gym would have had the same thought: here comes overtime.
With his team trailing by two in the waning seconds of Tuesday’s game, Toppin found himself wide open under the basket. But he went up too strong, and somehow, his layup attempt missed and the ball fell safely into the hands of Shoreham forward Danny Hughes, who dribbled out the final two seconds in a 47-45 Wildcats win. Size isn’t everything for a basketball team, but it sure is nice to have.
Certainly, height can be overrated, but when that height is accompanied by talent, it can make a difference. That is something the Shoreham-Wading River High School boys basketball team can appreciate. (more…)
