Kian Martelli is the first to admit that he’s not the same athlete in training as he is in an official competition. When it comes to a track and field meet, that’s when the real competitor in Martelli comes out — all 6 feet, 2 3/4 inches of him.
From a distance, Riverhead boys winter track coach Sal Loverde could see the intensity in Martelli’s eyes as he stepped up for a triple jump in the Section XI large school team championships Monday night. “He’s fired up right now,” Loverde said. “Let’s see what he does.” READ
