SECTION XI INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS/STATE QUALIFIER
The lasting image of Maddie Blom on Friday was one of devastation. Having just completed one of her worst days throwing the discus, the Riverhead High School senior was hunched over, her emotions getting the best of her as she was being consoled.
Blom, who had been seeded fourth in the event for the Section XI Individual Championships/state qualifier, has thrown the discus as far as 113 feet 7 inches. On Friday, she fouled before turning in throws of 94 feet 1 inch and then 101, and her day was done. She finished a disappointing eighth. (more…)

It would be understandable if Meg Tuthill felt a tad overwhelmed at the start of the 800-meter race Monday in the Division III Championships. The McGann-Mercy sophomore stood at the starting line surrounded by some of the top runners on Long Island: the Guevara sisters of Miller Place and Sarah Hardle of John Glenn, who last spring finished sixth in the 800 at the state championship. The members of Section XI’s distance-medley relay team were essentially strangers just a few days earlier. On Saturday afternoon, they became tied together forever as state champions.
Describing the scene on the podium at Cornell University’s Barton Hall, one of those team members, Meg Tuthill, said, “It was like we were all best friends — and we don’t really know each other.”
A state winner’s medal will do that. (more…)

LONG ISLAND ELITE TRACK INVITATIONAL
If Maddie Blom’s aim in competing in the prestigious Long Island Elite Track Invitational on Friday was to face top-flight competition in advance of the upcoming state meet, it worked.
While some of Long Island’s best shot putters may not have exactly brought out the best in Blom, they came quite close. The Riverhead High School senior turned in a throw of 36 feet 6 inches — within one inch of her personal record. It was good for fourth place in the meet at St. Anthony’s High School. Finishing ahead of Blom were Manhasset senior Tara Belinsky (41-11), Holy Trinity junior Kristina Insingo (41-4) and Half Hollow Hills West senior Oyinkansola Adewale (39-4 1/4). (more…)
