Tim Rotanz of Wading River scored three goals to help Maryland win its first NCAA men’s lacrosse championship since 1975 Monday with a 9-6 defeat of Ohio State at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. The junior attack was named to the all-tournament team. READ

Scoring goals is nice, but Ryan Bitzer seems to enjoy setting up goals as much as scoring them. “Always been a passer,” he said.

That goes back to his days as a three-sport athlete at Riverhead High School. Whether it was football (as a quarterback), basketball or lacrosse, it was Bitzer’s nature to pass.

Shoreham-Wading River graduate Mike Malave has scored 17 goals in six games for Hofstra University this season. (Credit: Zack Lane/Hofstra University)

For Hofstra University senior attackman Mike Malave, this season has been a quantum leap over his past years with the lacrosse team.

Through six games, the former Shoreham-Wading High School standout already has accumulated 17 goals. In contrast, he scored 9, 11 and 26 goals, respectively, his previous three seasons.

Long Island University Post junior midfielder Connor Drost entered the very first East Coast Conference men’s lacrosse tournament with rather ordinary numbers this season.
