Kelly Wooten and her friend Frank Ruskowski recently enjoyed an exciting and memorable trip to China. They toured the Leshan giant Buddha, carved into a cliff, and saw the terracotta warriors, over 8,000 life-size statues of soldiers and horses guarding an ancient tomb. They were able to hold a baby panda in Chen Gdu and did the plank walk on Mount Huashan, looking down 6,000 feet from a couple boards on a mountain. (more…)

The sign outside CK Auto in Wading River shows my favorite phrase for this time of year: “Remember the reason for the season.” So many holidays are choked with commercialism and lose their meaning. My daughter had to work Thanksgiving night. I applaud the businesses that refused to open because of the assault on Thanksgiving in favor of Black Friday. OK, it’s time for the rain to end. It is December after all. Let it snow! (Don’t give me that look!)

Riverhead Central School District deserves congratulations! It raised $5,000 for the Special Olympics at its Polar Plunge event at Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai Nov. 22. We are very proud of all of you for representing the district. Awesome job!  (more…)

Living Water Church presents its show, “The Wonder of Christmas,” Dec. 11-13 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 14, at 3 p.m. I have attended this event for many years and it’s always been special. This presentation will definitely put you in the Christmas spirit. News from St. Isidore School: Nancy Ryan’s seventh-grade class has started an Advent project to raise money for children in Africa. Also, Father Peter contacted his friend who is a missionary there and asked him to help buy shoes for the children. This is a wonderful time of the year to help those in need.  (more…)

It’s that time of year again. Kick off your holiday shopping at Old Steeple Church’s annual Christmas Fair Saturday, Dec. 6, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be Christmas crafts and cookies for sale, a quilt raffle and a chinese auction. Also, there will be food for sale including gingerbread houses, homemade candy, breads, muffins, pickles and jellies. Lunch will also be available for purchase. Items include soup, chili, sandwiches, salads, hot dogs, soda, bottled water, coffee and tea.  (more…)
