Riverhead Town police released Tuesday photos taken from surveillance footage of the Feb. 11 robbery at the OK Petro Mini Mart gas station in Riverhead.
A Riverhead man was arrested early Wednesday morning after police said he was caught by a K-9 in a gas station he had burglarized.
Riverhead police said they were alerted after a commercial burglary alarm went off around 4 a.m. at 1212 E. Main Street, the site of OK Petro, as well as a mini mart. Upon arrival with several patrol cars and a K-9 unit, police reported that the front door had been damaged and while an officer was attempting to enter the shop, he noticed the burglar inside.
According to Riverhead police, 20-year-old Sundiata Evans then fled within the building and was soon after caught with the help of the K-9 they had brought along.
He was charged with third-degree burglary, criminal mischief in the third degree, both felonies, as well as resisting arrest, a misdemeanor. He was held pending an arraignment.
Wednesday morning was a busy one for the Riverhead police force: police were called to the scene of a reported armed robbery attempt around 7:15 a.m. at CVS on Route 58, as well as another burglary at Stotzky Park, where thieves reportedly stole a cash register, candy and soda from the Little League shed.
