A 30-year-old Riverhead man was arrested on Peconic Avenue in Riverside after being seen in public under the influence of PCP, Southampton Town police said.

A police officer had observed Brian Kizielewicz of East Second Street about 8:20 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 3, in such a drug-induced state he may have endangered himself or others in the area, police said.

He was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment, then ticketed and released from police custody, authorities said.

He was charged with a violation, under state law.

PCP, also known as Angel Dust, is a hallucinogen that often causes people to act violently, and also leaves them numb to pain, including the pepper spray police sometimes use to restrain violent suspects, officials say.

Mr. Kizeliewicz has been arrested for PCP possession before.

In September 2011, he was found in possession of PCP, marijuana and heroin after being observed riding a bicycle erratically on Flanders Road, according to Southampton Town police, who charged him with drug possession at the time.

He also served jail time earlier this year for second-degree attempted criminal possession of a weapon, according to the state Department of Corrections.
