DEBORAH WETZEL PHOTO |  A bullfrog in Willow Pond in Riverhead.

News-Review reader Deborah Wetzel always wanted to get a photo of the bullfrogs that make their home in Willow Pond in Riverhead. In the spring, Ms. Wetzel noted how she can always hear the bullfrogs buzzing about.

With a new digital Sony camera, Ms. Wetzel noticed the bullfrogs out “sunning themselves” on a recent day and found the perfect opportunity to capture a few photos.

The male bullfrogs’ call is described as “reminiscent of the roar of a bull.” Hence, a bullfrog.

PetWatch, a program that provides consumers with information on exotic pets, listed the bullfrog as a “Worst Choice” pet.

Better to leave them in their pond.

A Riverhead News-Review reader posted a video on Facebook Monday of what she called “funky bugs” crawling on one of her car tires.

“They were growing on a neighbors evergreen bushes,” she said. “After they were knocked down, a bunch decided to crawl up the tire of one of our cars. Whatever they are, they are killing the bushes.”

Are they green grubs? Watch the video and let us know what you think.

WILL BURKHARD PHOTO | The Venus transit is a once-in-a-lifetime event that won't happen again until 2117.

Did you miss the Venus transit Tuesday?

Riverhead News-Review reader Will Burkard was at Reeves Beach when he caught the once-in-a-lifetime celestial event with his telescope.

The Venus transit occurs when Venus, the second planet from the Sun and the Earth’s neighbor, crosses the Sun’s face. The rare event will not happen again until 2117.
