Five people were arrested during Stop DWI patrols in Riverhead on St. Patrick’s Day, Riverhead Town police said.

Police set up three sobriety checkpoints within the town between 4 p.m. Tuesday and 1 a.m. Wednesday morning. The checkpoints were conducted on Route 105 south of Route 25, East Main Street near Elton Avenue and on Peconic Avenue.  (more…)

Snow and ice melted by today’s sunny weather has caused major flooding on some roads, including Reeves Avenue, Doctor’s Path, the southern end of Hulse Landing Road and other low-lying roadways, according to a Riverhead Town press release.

“Do not attempt to drive over a flooded road,” the release states. “Turn around and go another way. If you become stranded, or in case of an emergency, dial 911 or call the Riverhead Police Department at 631-727-4500. Stay safe and, as always, stay informed.”

A 48-year-old Riverhead man was arrested on a parole warrant, drug charges and for resisting arrest Tuesday night, Riverhead Town police said.

Jerry Nelson was walking on Oakland Drive North at around 9:10 p.m. and fled when officers attempted to apprehend him on the parole warrant, officials said.

After catching up to him following the foot pursuit, Mr. Nelson was found to be in possession of crack cocaine, heroin and marijuana, police said.

He was charged with third-degree and fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest and unlawful possession of marijuana, officials said.

The Riverhead Town Police C.O.P.E. unit and K-9 unit assisted the New York State Division of Parole to execute the parole warrant, officials said.

A Riverhead man was arrested this morning after a tenant of his said he threatened him with a baton.

According to police, 47-year-old John Kwasna was accused by his tenant, a 22-year-old Riverhead man, of menacing him. After a police investigation, Mr. Kwasna was charged with second-degree menacing, a misdemeanor.

After being arrested on a civilian complaint, Mr. Kwasna was later released on his own recognizance.

An order of protection was requested by the victim.
