UPDATE: A voice message from Carl Semmler, principal of Bishop McGann-Mercy High School, said the teen arrested yesterday in relation to a bomb threat was a school student who will no longer be going to the school.

The message, sent to families of students who attend the school, said the teen “admitted to placing a threatening note on the rear windshield of a car parked in the school lot.”

The message went on to state that “the student will no longer be attending our school. Please know the safety of our students is always at the forefront of our efforts.”

After four bomb threats were reported at Bishop McGann-Mercy and Riverhead High Schools in the month of January, a $5,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to the arrest of the people responsible for the threats. (more…)

Riverhead Police Officer Christopher Burns already had his department’s “officer of the year” award in the bag by Dec. 29, according to Police Chief David Hegermiller, who makes the choice.

But on the night of Dec. 29, Mr. Burns added the icing to the cake when he helped rescue a man who had fallen into the icy waters of the Peconic River.  (more…)

Riverhead Police said a man under house arrest for allegedly embezzling over $10 million from his family’s West Babylon business was found dead in his house Wednesday morning in an apparent suicide.

Two weeks after local authorities responded to four threats in two days made to local schools, Riverhead police were called to yet another bomb scare at Bishop McGann-Mercy High School — and another bomb report that turned out to be false. (more…)
