• A man left the Stop & Shop on Route 58 without paying for numerous items Monday at about 7:30 p.m., according to Riverhead Town police. The suspect fled in a black Dodge Dakota, having left the stolen items in the parking lot when he was confronted by store security, who recovered the items, according to police. (more…)

A Kings Park man caught stealing ammunition from Walmart in Riverhead Saturday was also found to be in possession of a switchblade, a loaded .40 caliber semiautomatic handgun and an unauthorized assault rifle with numerous high capacity magazines, town police said. (more…)

Jill Kubetz’s 4-year-old daughter, Rachel, has given her a new nickname: “Sgt. Mommy.”
It’s a moniker she’s proud of, because it proves to her two young daughters that they can be grow up to be whatever they want.
So at last Thursday’s Riverhead Town Board meeting, when it came time for her to become the town’s first female police sergeant, Sgt. Kubetz knew exactly who would be front and center at her promotion. (more…)

One by one they left the Wildwood Acres Pavilion and headed up Hulse Avenue Monday night, lit candles in hand.
Braving temperatures well below freezing, approximately 70 friends and neighbors walked the few short blocks to the home on 12th Street where Tanya and Danielle Lawrence had been killed nearly 24 hours earlier.
The 43-year-old mother and her 17-year-old daughter were shot dead by Ms. Lawrence’s boyfriend, 44-year-old Thomas Calhoun, who then turned the gun on himself. Danielle was most likely shot coming to the aide of her injured mother, investigators said. (more…)
