The Riverhead High School girls volleyball team may not be quite ready yet to measure its progress by wins and losses, but that long-awaited win on Friday sure felt good.

Rose Horton has traded in Bishop McGann-Mercy green for Riverhead blue, and now the Blue Waves’ new girls volleyball coach has her work cut out for her.

The challenge stands in the form of taking over a team that went 0-14 last year, won only once in the past two years and has a 3-38 record over the last three seasons. READ

Immediately after East Rockaway put the finishing touches on its third straight Long Island softball championship, Bishop McGann-Mercy assistant coach Bob Fox could be heard telling the Monarchs to keep their heads up. It was only later, during the team’s postgame meeting in the outfield, when they received the go-ahead to let it all out.

One of the thoughts preceding the opener to the Suffolk County Class C softball finals Monday was that this one could get ugly. That would have been understandable, too, with Southold/Greenport’s first-string pitcher, Ashley Hilary, out with a broken finger on her throwing hand and a sophomore, Liz Jernick, taking her place in the pitching circle. It could have been called Mercy Appreciation Day.

Although the activities surrounding the Bishop McGann-Mercy softball team’s home game against Center Moriches on Tuesday didn’t have an official designation, Mercy Appreciation Day would have been as good as any. Signs were made for the occasion, with green and gold balloons hung from fencing. The players were presented with home-plate-shaped plaques that included the words, “FOREVER A MONARCH.” READ
