In response to outcry from town leaders in Southampton and Riverhead that the front lobby of the state police barracks in Riverside might go unmanned, state Senator Ken LaValle and Assemblyman Fred Thiele are saying the issue has do with trouble hiring a dispatcher.
A dispatcher would typically man the front desk, the representatives say.

Riverhead Supervisor Sean Walter is hoping to stave off what he says are impending plans by the state police to pull a desk officer from its Riverside barracks.
Mr. Walter sent a letter to Senator Ken LaValle (R-Port Jefferson) dated March 4 asking for the senator’s help to keep the barracks at 234 Riverleigh Avenue, near the Route 25 traffic circle, open to walk-in complaints and people who need assistance. (more…)
A Rocky Point woman was caught driving drunk in Flanders last week, New York State troopers said.
Melissa L. Sciara, 35, was stopped on Wednesday when officers observed her driving with a flat tire on Route 104, police said. Troopers allegedly determined Ms. Sciara was driving drunk and had an active warrant out for her arrest for criminal possession of marijuana.
She was issued traffic tickets and turned over to the Suffolk County Police Department on the active arrest warrant.
• A 20-year-old Rocky Point woman was arrested for possessing drugs on Saturday in Riverhead, state troopers said.
Emily A. Sugarman was stopped for speeding on Old County Road and was allegedly found in possession of marijuana.
She was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of marijuana.
• A Brentwood man was arrested for driving drunk in Flanders on Sunday, state police said.
Maynor J. Gamoneda Mejia, 30, was stopped for a traffic violation on Flanders Road when he was allegedly found to be intoxicated.
He was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated.
A Riverside man was arrested for drunken driving last Sunday after “several” other motorists called 911 to report his erratic driving, according to a state police news release. (more…)
A Flanders man was charged with felony driving while intoxicated after he was pulled over on Old Country Road last Monday, Oct. 13, state police said.
Troopers stopped Juan Palacios, 29, near the intersection of Doctors Path, according to a news release. An investigation revealed that he was drunk, police said, and he was arrested at the scene. (more…)
A Center Moriches man was arrested for drunken driving during an early morning traffic stop in Flanders Saturday, according to a state police news release.
Elmantas Valys, 26, was pulled over about 3:25 a.m. on County Route 31, state police said. Mr. Valys took a breath test and had a .19 percent blood alcohol content, according to the release.
He was charged with driving while intoxicated and released with a future court date in Southampton Town.
A 51-year-old Riverside man arrested earlier this year on drug charges was taken into custody Sunday after he allegedly choked another person during a dispute, according to a state police news release. (more…)
A 21-year-old Flanders man was charged with misdemeanor weapons and drug possession after he was pulled over in Riverside Sunday night, state police said.
Jaymie Petraszewski was stopped on Flanders Road about 9 p.m. for “moving from [his] lane unsafely,” according to a state police news release. State troopers found Mr. Petraszewski had two pills of diazepam, a prescription medication, as well as a “double-edged dagger,” a state trooper said.
He was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation, according to the police statement. He was released with a court date in Southampton Town next month, police said.
