If the Riverhead football team has proved anything this season, it’s that its games are chock-full of drama. A Blue Waves game has become must-watch high school football.

Today should be another good one as the 5-0 Blue Waves travel to West Babylon to face the only other unbeaten team in Division II. Only three other teams in Suffolk County (Sachem North, D-I; Sayville, D-III; John Glenn, D-IV) are still unbeaten.

The Riverhead News-Review will provide live coverage right here.

While both teams are 5-0, West Babylon is technically in first place based on the power points. So call the Blue Waves an underdog if you wish.

The Blue Waves come into tonight’s 7 p.m. game off a win against Walt Whitman, which was much closer than the Blue Waves would have liked. They persevered through a Charles Bartlett injury — one week after quarterback Ryan Bitzer missed some time from an injury — and came from behind to pull out another squeaker.

West Babylon has played its share of close games this season. The Eagles beat East Islip in overtime Week 2, 16-10. Last week the Eagles trailed by a touchdown at halftime against Hills West before winning 34-28.

The Eagles aired it out against the Colts with great success. Quarterback Clifton Melhado completed 20-of-28 passes for 342 yards and four touchdowns, according to the Newsday box score.

The Blue Waves have given up 30 points per game, so another shoot-out could be in order.

One other local football game is on the schedule at 7 p.m. tonight. McGann-Mercy (2-3) hosts Mount Sinai (4-1). The Mustangs come into the game as heavy favorites after a 26-20 win over previously unbeaten Amityville. The Monarchs, after posting consecutive shutouts, couldn’t contain the Hampton Bays ground attack in a 40-6 loss.
