SECTION XI DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIPS

Davion Porter is the relative newcomer to the triple jump. Marcus Moore is the veteran.

Porter is quick to remind his Riverhead teammate of that fact.

“I talk a lot of smack,” said Porter, a senior. “This is my first year doing this. First season ever tripling. And [Moore's] been doing this since middle school.”  (more…)

It would be understandable if Meg Tuthill felt a tad overwhelmed at the start of the 800-meter race Monday in the Division III Championships. The McGann-Mercy sophomore stood at the starting line surrounded by some of the top runners on Long Island: the Guevara sisters of Miller Place and Sarah Hardle of John Glenn, who last spring finished sixth in the 800 at the state championship.  (more…)

REDMEN 72, BLUE WAVES 64

As Davion Porter crossed the finish line, an agonizing split second shy of victory, the Riverhead senior collapsed onto the track at East Islip High School. All around him, members of East Islip’s track & field team raced to congratulate their teammate, junior Zach Acocella.

Down the final stretch of the 4 x 400 relay Tuesday afternoon, Porter and Acocella were dead even. At stake was the League IV title.  (more…)

In both hurdle races in track and field, a runner must clear 10 hurdles to complete each race. The shorter race, the 110-meter hurdles, and the longer 400 may seem quite similar.

As Bishop McGann-Mercy senior Luis Cintron knows, conquering both races presents a unique challenge.  (more…)
