A Wading River woman and her family’s two dogs were rescued from a structure fire that “significantly” damaged a Dogwood Drive home this morning.
About 60 fire personnel from seven different departments responded to the two-story home shortly after 8:20 a.m., Wading River fire officials and Riverhead Town police said at the scene. (more…)
A rescue by a Good Samaritan in the Long Island Sound near Wading River Saturday night led to confusion when the empty boat was recovered by emergency personnel who had no knowledge of the save Sunday morning, according to a press release issued by the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound.

Update 4 p.m.: Riverhead police said a fire that burned an abandoned barn to the ground in Calverton Wednesday afternoon “does not appear suspicious.”
The fire remains under investigation by Riverhead police detectives. Anyone with information on the fire are asked to call police at 727-4500 ext. 321. (more…)

As you walk east along Oakwood on the Sound beach at the end of Hulse Landing Road in Wading River, a fence stretching more than 100 yards contains signs warning beachgoers of the dangerous collapsing cliffs above.
But just beyond the fencing are several bluffs that, although steep, can be climbed by any able-bodied person seeking a thrill.
On Sunday evening, during a private Memorial Day weekend party on the beach, a climb up one of those bluffs turned tragic. (more…)
The Wading River Fire Department will host an open house Saturday as part of a county-wide recruitment drive to get more firefighters in the ranks.
Like all North Fork fire departments, the Wading River department is staffed with volunteers.
“You take care of your own community,” said assistant fire chief Kevin Mcqueeney.
The drive will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the department’s firehouse on North Country Road.

Firefighters from the Riverhead, Wading River and Manorville Fire Departments have been battling brush fires throughout the area Wednesday as ideal fire weather conditions and high winds sweep over Long Island.
The National Weather Service has warned that while Tuesday night’s strong coastal storm missed the East End, winds of 20-30 miles per hour with gusts up to 50 mph will persist through the evening. (more…)

Neighbors and friends of a Wading River family have raised over $10,000 to help them get back on their feet after their Michaels Lane home was gutted in a fire earlier this week.
The home of George and Jean Dalecki caught fire just after midnight Tuesday while the couple were inside, Wading River Fire Chief Mark Donnelly said. Their house, cars and personal belongings were all destroyed.
