First crash at new Route 58 roundabout

Wednesday marked the first accident at the intersection of Route 58 and Roanoke Avenue since a two-lane roundabout became fully operational 10 days ago, police said.
Witnesses at the scene said a tractor trailer hit a black Cadillac sedan, nearly crushing the car about 2:30 p.m. No one appeared to be seriously injured in the crash. Riverhead Police reached Thursday could not say if the drivers received medical attention.
A clerk at the nearby 7-Eleven, Erin Corcoran, said a swarm of people descended on the crash scene.
She said it was the first accident she had witnessed at the roundabout, through she was not surprised. “It’s dangerous,” she said.
