Riverhead building department blaze under investigation

Fire broke out Friday night inside the Riverhead Town building department office at 201 Howell Avenue, across the street from Town Hall.
Heavy smoke and flames had already engulfed a portion of the building when Riverhead police officers responded to the scene. But police said firefighters arrived so quickly that they were able to confine the flames to the northwest corner of the building.
Still, much of the building was affected by heat and smoke, police said.
No injuries were reported.
The Suffolk County Police Department Arson Squad and local authorities are investigating the cause. It was not immediately clear if any records had been damaged.
For several years the building housed the town’s senior center.
