Three rescued from sinking sailboat

Three boaters were rescued Thursday from the Long Island Sound after their 24-foot sailboat began taking on water, Riverhead Police said.
The passengers, Elaine Peterson, Jonathan Hausned and Robert Newman, all of Hampton Bays, told police they purchased the boat in Queens and were bringing it to a marina in Hampton Bays. Their boat veered off course about 6:30 p.m. and they drifted too far from the shoreline and were caught in rough seas, authorities said.
“Being they had a small vessel, the water splashed up on them,” said Riverhead police detective Mark Stromski. “I don’t think they were too experienced.”
Members of the Riverhead Police dive escorted the boat to Matt-A-Mar Marina in Mattituck. The Jamesport Fire Department, Riverhead Fire Depart, Suffolk County Police Marine & Aviation Unit and the U.S. Coast Guard also responded.
None of the boaters were injured.
