Minivan driver rescued after Route 58 crash

A driver was trapped inside a minivan Sunday night after being struck by a tractor-trailer on Route 58 in Riverhead, fire department officials said.

The truck, which was traveling east, struck the van near the intersection of Mill Road about 10:30 p.m. Volunteers removed the vehicle’s door using a Jaws of Life tool and rescued the trapped driver, whom officials did not identify.

The victim was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead for treatment of undisclosed injuries. It was not clear if there were other passengers inside the minivan. Firefighters closed a portion of Route 58 for about a half-hour while they worked to rescue the driver.
