Riverhead’s ‘Iron Chef’
Jimmy Bridgewater won the title of ‘Senior Iron Chef’ in the third annual competition held recently in Janice Szczesny’s family and consumer science class at Riverhead High School. The challenge: to create, in one hour, ‘an imaginative, unique and visually appealing dish that has contrasting tastes and textures,’ and includes the required ingredients of chicken, rice, spinach and an edible garnish. Jimmy prepared chicken breast stuffed with sautŽed cabbage and Gruyre cheese. Jimmy, a second-year BOCES culinary arts student, will represent Riverhead in the Suffolk County Community College culinary arts scholarship competition. Daniel Romero Gonzalez was first runner-up.

National Library Week is April 11-17. Be sure to stop by Riverhead Free Library to view some of the displays that echo this year’s theme, “Communities Thrive at Your Library.” This is a great time to see the many programs that are available for all age groups. While you’re there, remember to say hello to director Lisa Jacobs as well as all the staff members who make the library a great place to visit.

The Polish Town Civic Association will hold its “Trash or Treasure and Giant Indoor Rummage Sale” on Saturday, April 10, and Sunday, April 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Chalet Headquarters, 300 Lincoln St. in Riverhead. See Calendar for more info.

Marie Deuel of the Eastern Long Island Quilters Guild would like to share that the well-known quilter and Alzheimer’s disease advocate Aimee Simms has written a book and created an exhibit of 52 quilts, “Alzheimer’s: Forgetting Piece by Piece,” which has traveled around the world to raise awareness and funds for research. This exhibit will be retired at the end of 2010. Marie needs the names of anyone deceased or currently affected by this disease to incorporate into her panels, which will be part of the newest quilt exhibit entitled, “Alzheimer’s Illustrated: From Heartbreak to Hope.” She needs the first name, last name, city and state. Call Marie at 631-428-1485. To see the new quilt, visit Alzquilts.org.

Don’t forget: The Woman’s Club of Riverhead exhibit will be on display Tuesday through Saturday from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. until the end of April at the Suffolk County Historical Society Museum, 300 West Main St. in Riverhead. No fee; donations accepted.
