William Gettis Peele

William Gettis Peele of Riverhead, known as “Babe,” died March 27 at Peconic Bay Medical Center. He was 78.

He was born March 15, 1932, to Aaron and Rhoda Peele in Martin County, N.C., where he was raised. He moved to Riverhead in his early 20s and worked as a farm laborer for over 40 years.

Mr. Peele was a member of First Baptist Church of Riverhead, Riverhead Senior Center and the Middle Island-Nesconset Adult Center.

According to his family, he enjoyed playing lotto and telling stories.

Mr. Peele is survived by his siblings, Joan Brown and Marie, both of Williamston, N.C., Columbus Robinson of Salisbury, Md., and John, of the Bronx.

Funeral services were conducted April 1 at First Baptist Church by Pastor Charles Coverdale. Interment followed at Riverhead Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Seay Memorial Chapel in Riverhead.
