Pat Walsh of Lake Panamoka in Ridge loads her cart with azaleas and hanging baskets last Thursday morning on the first day of Peconic Bay Medical Center’s 15th annual East End Garden Festival. The event, which had offerings from more than three dozen local growers and Cornell Cooperative Extension master gardeners and Riverhead Garden Club members on hand to give advice, was held in the Staples shopping plaza on Route 58.

Congratulations to Millie Roth for dedicating 25 years of service to the Fire Police Patrol Company No. 1. Millie recently received her recognition pin by her company captain, Joe Goetz, at the Cooperage Inn. Millie, although your name was accidentally omitted, the honor bestowed upon you is a great achievement on your part. Thank you for your service to our community.

The Women’s Club of Riverhead will be holding their annual scholarship award luncheon, at which they will be featuring a one-act play, on Thursday, May 20, at 11:30 a.m. at the Vineyard Caterers. The cost is $38. For more information, call club president Thelma Booker at 727-5898 or Carol Werther at 325-2024. Scholarships will also be presented to local high school graduates.

Donna Mae Atkins and her faithful furry friend Simba will be participating in the “Bark Relay for Life” on Saturday, June 12, from 5 to 9:30 p.m. at Stotzky Park in Riverhead. This year the American Cancer Society will hold a noncompetitive walking event for dogs and their owners to raise funds and awareness for ACS’ fight against cancer. By supporting “Bark for Life” you will help save lives while having fun, with the ultimate goal of creating a world with less cancer and more birthdays. So bring your canine friend and join in for a fun-filled evening with a walk, continuing demonstrations, contests and games. If you wish to have your canine participate in a contest, the events are three for $10. Contests will include: dog/owner look-alike, best costume, musical sit, longest/shortest tail or ears, best tail-wagger, hula-hoop jump and “minute to win it.” If you would like to join a team, donate, or participate, log on to relayforlife.org/riverheadbark. Whether you decide to join a team or participate in the events, do come on down and root for your friends. It will be a great evening for a great cause.

Congratulations to Robert ‘Bubbie’ Brown, who received the “Friends of Education” award from Phi Delta Kappa International Stony Brook University Chapter. The award recognizes educators who exemplify the values of leadership, research and service in their daily lives. He accepted his award at a dinner at Stony Brook on April 30.

Riverhead Free Library has a new program geared toward students who need to fulfill their community service credits. They can do so by contributing to the Children’s Department’s “You Gotta Read This,” a students’ book review binder. Read books and share those you love with other readers by writing an enthusiastic review. Stop by the Children’s Department to pick up a review form or learn more by calling 727-3228.
