Flanders

Hello, friends and neighbors. I hope all the moms enjoyed their Mother’s Day last weekend. It was a little bit too cold and windy, but at least the sun was shining.

The countdown until the last day of school has begun in my house — how about yours? In case you’re wondering, there are approximately 33 days of school left — “approximately” because each school lets out differently. If you’re in high school you usually get out a bit earlier than if you’re in an elementary school. Either way, it’s time for us parents to make plans for the summer. Quick reminder, though, if you need camp medical forms filled out, please get them to your child’s doctor as soon as possible. If your child needs an up-to-date form, please call your doctor’s office and schedule that appointment as soon as possible.

Attention all teens in the area: Time is running out! Don’t forget the Southampton Youth Bureau is still accepting pictures for its sixth annual photography contest for middle and high school students. This year’s theme is, “What inspires you?” Prizes will be awarded for three best entries. All submissions will be displayed in Southampton Town Hall. Please send your photos, limit three per artist, along with your name, age, phone number, address, and an explanation as to why you chose your subject to: Southampton Youth Bureau Photo Contest, 116 Hampton Road, Southampton, N.Y. 11968, or e-mail your pictures to [email protected]. The deadline for all submissions is Friday, May 21. For more information, call the Southampton Youth Bureau at 702-2421 or log on to southamptontownny.gov/youthbureau.

The Flanders Fire Department is hosting a spaghetti dinner on Friday, May 21, from 5-8 p.m. Tickets are only being sold in advance and are $9 for adults, $7 for seniors and children under 12. Takeout is available. Call 727-0758 or ask a firefighter.

The RHS Class of 1985 is planning its 25threunion. I’ll have more information next week, but in the meantime please see its Facebook page (type “Riverhead High School Class of 1985 25th reunion” in your Facebook search bar).

Happy birthday to Ashley Trent, daughter of Crystal Robinson Trent, who celebrated her 21st on May 11, from her mom, her grandmother, and her aunts and uncles. They hope you had a fantastic day and they love you very much.

Congratulations to Kevin Stevenson, 7-year-old grandson of Mrs. Bernice Brown, a teacher and coach at Riverhead Middle School. Kevin won the iPod touch that was raffled off at the dance held there a few weeks ago to benefit fellow student Spencer Shea. Coach Brown told me that Kevin was extremely happy to win, he’s been wanting an iPod touch for a long time. The Shea family sends a thank-you to everyone for all your support and prayers for Spencer. The next event for Spencer is in the final planning stages, and I’ll have complete information next week, so please be sure to check in.

Have a wonderful weekend, and please remember to call or e-mail me with any news you’d like to share with the community.
