Kathy Taylor and Patricia Carey recently received their five-year certificates and pins from the Cornell Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Program for outstanding volunteer service at Roanoke Avenue Elementary School. Both started a Junior Master Gardener Program with Girl Scout Troop 2309 and Brownie Troop 1689. Troop leaders Jeanine Zeltmann and Shannon Kutner are using the Junior Master Gardener Program to help their troops earn merit badges.

Brendan Quinn, son of Jeanmarie Costello and the late Dennis Quinn, graduated on June 6 from Chaminade High School in Mineola. While at Chaminade, Brendan was a member of the National Honor Society, co-captain of the Speech and Debate Team, co-president of the Glee Club and an officer of the Darby Players. He was also a Commended Student of the National Merit Scholarship Program, and at graduation received the Albert Kozar Award for Drama, the President’s Award for Educational Excellence, the Honor Character Certificate, and Certificate of Merit for Achievement in English. Brendan qualified for the National Forensic League National Tournament in Kansas City, beginning on June 12. He will be attending Georgetown University in September.

The Riverhead Middle School ‘Middle Masques’ put on a wonderful performance in “The Wizard of Oz” this past weekend. Produced by Patricia Skura and directed by Ed Tholl Jr., the cast included Katie Barbe, Chris Bassat, Emily Behr, Kyle Breitenbach, Megan Brewer, Karli Cahill, Rebecca Capobianca, Samantha Carter, Kayla Ellwood, Melissa Gillian, Alyssa Hartmayer, Michelle Hattorff, Paige Heller, Sarah Huneault, Ryan Lynn, Erik Markowski, Ryan McGill, Heather O’Connor, Timmy Oliver, Abigail Ormandy, Raquel Perodin, Peanut Skura, Erin Plitt, Ashlyn Sagarin, Hannah Schneider, Julia Spanburgh, Samantha Starsiak, Michael Stewart-Liebegott, Jonathan Troiano, Aubree Walters, and Ronnie Wilson. Thanks to Mrs. Passanante, stage manager, Rebecca Ramsey and Nancy Mastroangelo, makeup artists, and James Perry and John Lang, ushers. Christopher Hand, a custodian at the school, did a magnificent job building the set. This is the Middle Masques’ third production and I can’t wait for the next one! Next stop … Broadway?

Belated 60th wedding anniversary wishes to Wesley and Helen Harris of Riverhead, who celebrated on June 10. They enjoyed a lunch with their daughter Debbie at Oakland’s in Hampton Bays and a Sunday brunch with the family at The Cooperage Inn. Congratulations on this milestone and sto lat! Here’s to many more years of wedded bliss for this wonderful couple.
