Baseball great Tommy John coming to the North Fork

Legendary major league pitcher Tommy John will be in attendance at
the Riverhead Tomcats game at Riverhead High School Friday, as part of
his weekend tour of Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League games.

A 288-game winner in the big leagues, the former Yankee is perhaps best known for the elbow surgery named after him.

On
Friday, fans in attendance will get to know him for a different reason,
as he meets and greets those in attendance and poses for photos.

Aside
from the Riverhead game, which begins at 5 p.m.,  Mr. John will also
drop by that night’s North Fork game at Hite Field in Westhampton.

On
Saturday, he’ll drop by Cochran Park in Peconic for North Fork’s 7 p.m.
home game against Riverhead. On Sunday, he’ll be back on the road with
North Fork as they play Southampton at 5 p.m. on the SUNY campus.

The
summer league features 125 college baseball players from prominent
programs such as Vanderbilt, Stanford, St. John’s, Long Beach State and
Southern Mississippi.

Mr. John’s 26-year career included four
All-Star Game selections, three 20-win seasons and three World Series
appearances. His win total is seventh-highest among left-handers in
major league history.

Mr. John played eight seasons over two stints with the Yankees, winning 21 games in 1979 and 22 in 1980.
