Dorothy M. Griffin

Former Riverhead School District teacher Dorothy M. Griffin died May 28 at the age of 99.

Formerly of Yonkers, Ms. Griffin lived most of her life in South Jamesport.

She was predeceased by her husband, Oliver Griffin, and daughter, June Cheshire. She is survived by two grandchildren, Tracey Milowski and Tammy Harned, and four great-grandchildren.

A dedicated teacher all her life, Mrs. Griffin was head teacher at New Suffolk School and a first-grade teacher in Jamesport, Sound Avenue, Riley Avenue and Riverhead schools.

Mrs. Griffin was active in the Jamesport Civic Association and Jamesport Congregational Church. She also enjoyed working on projects for the Peconic Bay Medical Center Auxiliary.

She was a soft-spoken, kind person who spent her life giving her love and support not only to each member of her family but also to each student who came into her class or under her care as a teacher. Her example was one of acceptance and concern for everyone.

Services were held June 2 at Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead. Interment followed at Jamesport Cemetery.
