Name of victim released in fatal four-car accident in Aquebogue

Police have identified 80-year-old Valantin Mirjani as the person killed in a four-car crash in Aquebogue Saturday afternoon that left six people hospitalized.
Ms. Mirjani was a passenger in a 2007 Toyota Camry, driven by 54-year-old Behrouz Benyaminpour of Great Neck, that was traveling eastbound on Main Road, just east of Colonial Drive, shortly before 1 p.m., police said. It crossed the double yellow line and collided head-on with a westbound Hyundai Elantra driven by Joseph Fulcoly, 18, of Calverton.
Just before the crash, Mr. Benyaminpour’s car forced Carlene Devito, 65, of Hampton Bays, who was driving west in a 1998 Jeep, to swerve off the road onto the shoulder. It also sideswiped a westbound 2005 Honda driven by Courtney Riso, 28, of Jamesport.
Ms. Mirjani was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center with head trauma and later died.
Mr. Benyaminpour, Mr. Fulcoly and Ms. Riso were taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, where they were treated for undisclosed injuries. Mr. Benyaminpour’s other passengers, Haleh Kerendian of Great Neck and two unidentified juveniles, were also taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center.
Police said they don’t know why Mr. Benyaminpour had driven into oncoming traffic. An investigation was continuing. Police are asking witnesses to contact Riverhead Police at 727-4500.
