Katherine C. Wulffraat

Katherine Carroll Wulffraat, 93, passed away Sunday, July 11, 2010, at Peconic Bay Skilled Nursing Facility in Riverhead.

A lifelong resident of Riverhead, she was born on June 3, 1917, to John E. Maloney of Riverhead and the former Katherine H. Carroll of Peconic. A map of Riverhead from 1870 shows her grandfather, Patrick Maloney, residing at 29 Third Street, in the house where she was later born.

Ms. Wulffraat was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Arnold T. Wulffraat, in 1999 and her sister, Margaret Maloney Schneckendorf, in 1985.

After her three children were in school, Ms. Wulffraat returned to work for the Riverhead Central School District for over 20 years, assisting coaches Mike McKillop and Jim Gilhooley in the athletic department. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading and playing bridge. She was part of a group of local women who played bridge every other Thursday for over 50 years.

She is survived by her daughters, Karen and Lisa, her son, Arnold, and his wife, Lori, all of Riverhead; a grandson, Nicholas; and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Vaughan of Boston.

A graveside service will be held at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Cemetery in Riverhead on Friday, July 16, at 11 a.m. Memorial donations may be sent to Riverhead Free Library.
