After a Fourth of July holiday weekend with no blazes, four separate brush fires were reported in the Riverhead Fire District Monday.
Volunteers started the day by putting out a brush fire on an empty lot next to Sujecki Farms & Nurseries in Calverton Monday morning. About 40 volunteers responded to the fire, which was first reported at about 10:15 a.m. and was located on Twomey Avenue, just south of Sound Avenue. The blaze was completely extinguished by 10:40 a.m. No injuries were reported.
Riverhead Fire Chief Nick Luparella said the cause of the fire is unknown.
In the late afternoon and evening two fires were reported on South River Road in Calverton and one more on Doctor’s Path.
