Riverhead

Riverhead Free Library will host its annual local history discussion on Saturday, Aug. 28, from 10 a.m. to noon. The theme for this year’s program is “Community Volunteerism –Then and Now.” Local historian Richard Wines will trace the history of volunteerism in Riverhead. There will be an informal discussion about current volunteer organizations and activities in Riverhead and the surrounding areas. Staff and volunteers from local nonprofits and clubs, as well as those interested in volunteering or learning more, will be participating. The program is open to everyone. Advance sign-up is encouraged but not necessary. Participants will be asked to sign a release form giving permission to film the event. Riverhead cardholders who would like to learn more about the area’s history and activities may pick up or order a copy of the book, “Journey Through Time: The Riverhead Bicentennial 1792-1992,” edited by Barbara Austen. For more information about this and other reading events, call the adult reference desk at Riverhead Free Library at 727-3228.

Don’t forget! Riverhead High School’s Class of 1950 will be holding its 60th class reunion on Friday, Sept. 10, at the Meeting House Creek Restaurant at 12:30 p.m. Call Dorothy Podlas at 727-3033 and relive those good-old high school days by mingling with each other.
