East End Arts Council gallery director Jane Kirkwood holds the photograph titled ‘The Road’ by Richard Wozniak of Shoreham that won best in show in the ‘Scenes From a Book’ juried photography exhibit that is on view at the EEAC gallery in Riverhead through Oct. 8. Mr. Wozniak’s photo is based on the Cormac McCarthy novel of the same name.  Dana Bordsen of Riverhead won second place and Steve Berger of Jamesport placed third.
Due to Friday’s tropical storm, the show’s opening reception has been rescheduled to Friday, Sept. 10, 5 to 7 p.m.

Riverhead Central School District employees were invited to the official welcoming ceremony held in the Riverhead High School auditorium on Sept. 1. Board of Education president Ann Cotton-DeGrasse introduced Superintendent of Schools Nancy Carney, who received a three-minute standing ovation, welcoming her as she begins her new position of leading RCSD into the future. Awards were given to several outstanding teachers and staff: elementary staff Elwood Lamb; elementary teacher Maryanne Haroun; secondary staff Bernice Brown; and secondary teachers Tim Page and Jill Tapper. Pins for recognition for years of service went to the following: 25 years — Andrej Aleksandrowicz, Joanne Byrne, Toni Gallo, Kathy Hamilton, Shirley Hill, Kathleen Lester, Karen Mickaliger, Barbara Quick, Janice Schumacher, Kim Ulmet, Maxine Utter and Michelle Vincent; 30 years — Mary Cholodenko, Jimmy Dean, Dorothy Dillon, Robert Lucas, Jennie Miloski and Patricia Skura. Frank Rotenberg was honored for 35 years of service. A special plaque was given to Carl James for his 50 years of service to the district. Thanks go to the NJROTC for the color guard presentation and for leading everyone into the Pledge of Allegiance, and to Shauna Huizing, who sang “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Congratulations to Catherine Urevich, who recently graduated from Peconic Bay Medical Center’s Radiological School’s two-year program. Her husband, John, is truly proud of her accomplishment.

Belated happy birthday to Amy Smith. Her birthday was June 22 but she celebrated on Aug. 30 with her family, making it extra special for all of them. Amy’s parents, Dave and Nancy Smith, were very happy with the small celebration.

Mark your calendar for the 12th annual 5K Walk for Breast Cancer Awareness on Sunday, Sept. 26, at Tanger Outlet Center, sponsored by the North Fork Breast Health Coalition. Registration is 7:30 to 8:45 a.m., the opening ceremony starts 8:45 a.m., and the walk starts promptly at 9 a.m. Join the fun and take a walk through Tanger and enjoy refreshments, giveaways, and 60-plus raffle prizes including a flat-screen TV.
