Pirkko A. Wanat

Longtime Baiting Hollow resident Pirkko A. Wanat died Aug. 29 in Riverhead. She was 78.

She was born Nov. 19, 1931, to Haanes and Signe Nylund in Pori, Finland, where she was raised. She moved to the United States permanently in 1956 and married William Wanat in Riverhead on Nov. 15, 1958.

Ms. Wanat worked for Ivy Acres in Baiting Follow for over 30 years, eventually becoming a manager there.

She was a parishioner of St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead and according to her family, she enjoying gardening, reading and being with friends and loved her family.

She is survived by her husband; two children, Sandra Buckholtz of Colorado and David, of Connecticut; her sister, Tulikki Nieminen of Finland; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The family received visitors Sept. 1 at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. today, Thursday, Sept. 2, at St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead. Interment will follow at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Cemetery in Riverhead.
