Riverhead: FD open house Oct. 17

Bob Szczepanik and Sandy Deon tied the knot on Oct. 9 at Riverhead Fire Department headquarters. Bob, a veteran firefighter and a safety officer in the department, arranged to exchange vows on its balcony. Judge Allen Smith, 1st lieutenant of Redbird Hook and Ladder Co., married the couple while perched in the rescue bucket of the RHLC truck. Witnesses included Kurt Harrison and Bunny Swiatocha. A small gathering celebrated at The Cooperage Inn. Congratulations!

RFD will hold its annual open house on Sunday, Oct. 17, from 1 to 5 p.m. at headquarters on 540 Roanoke Ave. Awards will be presented to the winners of the annual fire prevention poster contest. There will also be fire demonstrations, including heavy rescue and roof ventilation, along with the fire prevention trailer. Fire apparatus will be displayed throughout the day and many firefighters will be on hand to provide tours of the trucks and fire headquarters, and to answer any fire-safety questions the public may have. Light refreshments will be served. Hope to see you there.

The Peconic Medical Center Auxiliary thanks all its wonderful friends and neighbors who attended the recent fashion show at East Wind. The largest turnout to date, it was a wonderful display of the community’s support for the hospital. Special thanks to the models, who looked wonderful in the clothing and wore such big smiles. Dr. Daniel Hamou performed surgery in the morning prior to arriving at the event and Dr. Marilyn McLaughlin had to run off to catch up on her patients after her stint. The medical assistants, volunteers, hospital employees and all those who attended helped out with this worthy cause.

Support live music by enjoying the show at the Vail-Leavitt Music Hall today, Thursday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m. (doors open at 6:30 p.m.). Performing will be Grape Jam with Noah Gorman, Joe Mineo, Taylor Drenzyk and James DeNatale, and Coastline with Nick DiSalvo, Jess Moreno, Matt Caroll and Cassidy Gorman. Tickets are $5 in advance/$6 at the door.

Ann Cotten-DeGrasse, president of North Fork Breast Health Coalition, is urging the community to support Tanger Outlet Center’s “Shop Pink” discount cards, which went on sale Sept. 17 and will continue through Oct. 25. Cards may be purchased at the Tanger Mall office for $1, which provides a 25 percent discount on one item at any participating store. All proceeds benefit the NFBHC. Monies raised go directly toward programs such as “Lend a Helping Hand,” which provides grants to patients on the North Fork undergoing treatment for breast cancer.
