Flanders: SWR takes home Flanders Little League championship

There is something quite depressing about the change of seasons. Although the trees look gorgeous in their fall dress, it means that snow is quickly on its way. While I do like a good snowstorm, and a white Christmas is always welcome, I just wish it could be 80 degrees the following day.

Speaking of seasons, Halloween is this Sunday, which means the kiddies will have plenty of time to trick-or-treat. I hope the weather is good for them. There is nothing like not having to wear a coat while trick-or-treating. Cross your fingers that they have a good day.

Here’s some Flanders Little League news courtesy of Nicole Squires. The championship game and closing ceremonies of the third annual Flanders Fall Ball Classic took place on Oct. 23. It was a hard-fought game between the Shoreham-Wading River fall ball team and the East Quogue Penguins. SWR won, 2-1. A homerun derby was also held. Winners of the 9- to 10-year-old division were Joe Guzman (first) and Joseph Reiner (second), both Penguins. In the 11- to 12-year-old division the winners were Dan Hogan (first) of The Flanders Bay Bombers and Sebastian Naranjo (second) of the Quogue Penguins. FLL would like to thank the following volunteers: Vicki Farruggia, Dawn D’amour, Kayla D’amour, Emy Gray, Rebecca Gray, Deb Viani, and Ginna Hogan for all their help and support. And, as always, thanks to the tireless efforts of the board members, who devote so much time to the league.

The students at Phillips Avenue Elementary School have been very busy the last couple of weeks. On Oct. 14 they were treated to an assembly by the Costa Rica Performers to celebrate National Heritage Day. During Fire Safety Week, Oct. 18-22, the Riverhead Fire Department brought its “smokehouse” to the school. The students toured the smokehouse and learned about fire safety. Thank you to the fire department personnel for your wonderful presentations. They were very rewarding for the students! And finally, on Oct. 22, the third-graders at Phillips took a field trip to Brookhaven National Lab to explore and discover unique characteristics of animal tracks. They also explored invisible magnetic fields.

Happy 4th birthday to John Lennon Jr., who celebrated on Oct. 26, from Grandma and Pop-Pop Schadecker and all your family, who love you very much. Happy wedding anniversary to Debi and John Schadecker (aka Grandma and Pop-Pop) who celebrated 20 years together on Oct. 27. Your family and friends send their love and wish you both all the best.

My son and his friends went to the Haunted Path offered by Southampton Town Youth Bureau last Friday. They had a really good time. Thanks to the Youth Bureau for offering these events and for all the trips they organize.

That’s all for this week. I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend and I hope to see or hear from you soon with any news you’d like to share with the community. Give me a call or e-mail with birthdays, anniversaries and accomplishments. Please remember to drive safely, especially this Sunday.
