Riverhead: High school Key Club to host ‘Be Homeless’ fundraiser Oct. 29

The Daughters of the American Revolution, Suffolk Chapter continually searches for Riverhead Town citizens who volunteer their time. Members feel that volunteering is one of the greatest gifts a person can give to the community. In that regard, on Oct. 10 at the Riverhead Country Fair, National Society DAR Chaplain Caroline Stepnoski presented the Suffolk Chapter 2010 DAR Excellence in Community Service award to Ms. Betty Harrison for her compassion, love and dedication to the community and true spirit of volunteerism. Betty is a 29-year member of the Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps. She responds to calls days, evenings, during her lunch hour at her job and during the wee hours of the morning. Most everyone who calls for assistance recognizes Betty when she responds to a call and is comforted by her familiar face and demeanor, which has proven to be invaluable in obtaining patient information. She also volunteers at her church and has cared for four generations of her family. Other accolades Betty has received include “Corpsman of the Year” in 1988 and 2009. Also in 2009 she was ranked the seventh-highest responding member of the RVAC, sacrificing thousands of hours for our community.

The Riverhead High School Key Club, under the direction of adviser Louise Wilkinson, will once again be holding its “Be Homeless” fundraiser on Friday, Oct. 29, at 6 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. Students will sleep in cardboard-box homes to raise funds for those less fortunate. To donate, send a check or money order to: The Key Club, c/o Louise Wilkinson, 1036 Middle Road, Riverhead, NY 11901. Key Club students work in conjunction with the Kiwanis Club of Greater Riverhead.

A BENGO fundraiser for the Riverhead Middle School Middle Masques will be held Friday, Nov. 5, at 6:30 p.m. Prizes will be awarded to the winners. For a nominal fee you can have a great time with the family. Pat Skura and Ed Tholl will host this evening of fun. All proceeds benefit the Middle Masques’ production of “Alice in Wonderland.” For more information, call 369-6756.
