Sherwood M. Cooper Sr.

Sherwood M. Cooper Sr. of New Suffolk died at Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport on Monday, Oct. 18, 2010. He was 77 years old.
He was born on March 27, 1933, to William G. and Lyda (Campbell) Cooper and graduated from Southold High School in 1952. On July 19, 1953, he married the former Barbara Jordan in Cutchogue.
Sherwood served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years until his retirement as a BTC. He later retired from Local 30 Operating Engineers at Long Island University–Southampton College.
He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association and Cutchogue United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara; five children: William (Eileen), of Mattituck, Sherwood Jr., of Fort Myers, Fla., Timothy (Laura), of Santa Clarita, Calif., Laura (Charles) Goy of Cutchogue and Jason (Jeanette), of New Suffolk; a sister, Clara “Cotty” Tuthill of Cut­chogue; and 11 grandchildren: Andrew T. Cooper of Mattituck, Justin P. Cooper of Colorado, Alison M. Cooper of Mattituck, Tyler T. Cooper of Canada, Timothy J. Cooper of California, Courtney M. Cooper of California, Thomas M. Cooper of New Suffolk, Robert M. Cooper of New Suffolk, Anna G. Cooper of New Suffolk, Jaclyn L. Goy of Cutchogue and Sydney M. Goy of Cutchogue. He was predeceased by a son, Steven G. Cooper, a grandson, Travis S. Cooper, and three siblings, Marcella Leonard and James and Ruddy Cooper.
The family received friends Oct. 23 and 24 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. Funeral services were conducted Oct. 25 at Cutchogue United Methodist Church by the Revs. Wally Robinson and Thomas MacLeod. Military honors were rendered by the U.S. Navy.
