Veterans Day observances planned

Veterans Day observances have been planned in Riverhead Town for Thursday, Nov. 11.
Historically, Veterans Day commemorated the cessation of hostilities at the end of World Wars I and II and officially started at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Now the day also serves to honor veterans of the United States armed forces.
The events include:
• The Combined Veterans Committee of Riverhead’s annual ceremony at the World War I monument at the corner of Court and Main streets, rain or shine, is scheduled for 11 a.m.. Afterward, soup and light refreshments will be served at the American Legion, 89 Hubbard Ave.
• Calverton National Cemetery will hold Veterans Day ceremonies beginning at 1 p.m. The cemetery is located at 210 Princeton Blvd. in Calverton. Call 727-5410 or 5770 for details.
