Donald George Weitz
Former Wading River resident Donald George Weitz died Nov. 19 at Brighton Gardens in Port St. Lucie, Fla. He was 94.
He was born Sept. 12, 1916, in Brooklyn. He graduated from Jamaica High School in Queens and lived in Ozone Park before moving to Wading River.
During World War II, Mr. Weitz served in the U.S. Army in France. He was a New York City fireman for 20 years with Ladder 55 in Queens. He then worked for 16 years for the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare.
In 1978, after retiring, he moved to Jensen Beach, Fla., where he volunteered at the Jensen Beach House of Refuge and was active in the Friends of the Library, serving as president. He also worked for the Martin County Election Board and was active in the Presbyterian church in both Port Jefferson and Jensen Beach.
Mr. Weitz is survived by his daughter, Marilyn Filanski of Henrico, Va.; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.
Arrangements were handled by Cox-Gifford-Seawinds Funeral Home in Vero Beach, Fla. Interment was at Arlington National Cemetery.
