Southampton cops: We saw him smoking crack in his car

A 29-year-old Riverhead man was arrested on drug charges after police spotted him smoking crack in his car in Riverside, Southampton Town Police said Friday.
Police arrested Eric Stelzel on Nov. 30 on Enterprise Zone Drive after an officer spotted him and then searched his vehicle, turning up more crack, police said. The officer then determined Mr. Stelzel had a suspended license. He was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, both misdemeanors, and released without bail.
It was not clear in a press release why police released the information Friday, 10 days after the arrest.
