Former Riverhead resident Nettie Virginia Smith died Dec. 30 at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital in Patchogue. She was 91.
She was born Dec. 14, 1919, in Belona Powatan, Va., to Cornelius and Minnie Jackson.
Ms. Smith lived in Bellport for many years and worked with Wells Hulse and later Yaphank Farms until she retired. She belonged to Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Patchogue, serving as church mother, and was a 48-year member of Tyre Chapter No. 62, where she served all stations and was a past matron. She was also a Grand Chaplain Emeritus as appointed by Eureka Grand Chapter Prince Hall Order of Eastern Star Inc.
She was predeceased by her husband, Gerald; daughter, Lainie; and siblings Dorothy, Cordell, William and Alexander.
Ms. Smith is survived by her son, Richard; and her siblings Mamie, of New Jersey, Lillian, of Center Moriches, Joan, Charlotte and Lawyer, all of Riverhead, Charles, of North Carolina and Robert, of New Jersey.
Funeral services were held Jan. 4 at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Patchogue. Interment was at Calverton National Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Seay Memorial Chapel in Riverhead.
