Wrong-way driver nabbed for DWI during storm

Another day, another wrong-way DWI arrest.

As close to a foot of snow was falling on Wednesday morning, Riverhead Town police said Jonas Alvarez, 39, of Horton Avenue in Riverhead was pulled over about 6:15 a.m. after he was observed driving his 1992 Chevy southbound in the northbound lanes of Route 105 near Hubbard Avenue.

Route 105 is separated by a median at this point so traffic cannot cross into the opposite lane without falling into a ditch, meaning that Mr. Alvarez must have misdirected his car at an earlier point.

He was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and reckless driving, police said.

The arrest is the latest in a slew of wrong-way driving incidents reported by police throughout Suffolk County and the tri-state area.
