Calverton: RCFA variety show and Riley Avenue programs

Wow, what a winter we’re having. I never thought this much snow or cold would affect our neck of the woods. However, neither has stopped me from roasting some garlic and red peppers at the farm the other day. They tasted better than any we make during the summer. I have an idea — to enjoy a reminder of summer why not bundle up, head on outside and pop a burger on the grill.

Do you have cabin fever? If yes, then do I have a fun night for you. The RCFA Scholarship Variety Show will take place Friday, Feb. 4, in the Riverhead High School auditorium. For ticket information and further details, see the Coming Up section.

Riley Avenue Elementary School celebrated the Parents as Reading Partners program this week with lots of fun activities. Monday was Family Reading Night and a career fair; Tuesday was Poem in Your Pocket Day; and yesterday, Wednesday, was Read a T-shirt Day. Tomorrow, Thursday, Jan. 27, will see Guest Reader Day; and Friday, the 28th, Dress-up Day, where the students will dress up as who they want to be when they grow up.
The early-morning program at Riley is back again and is hosting a Socks for Soldiers drive. Donations of new socks, which can be dropped off in the box located in the main lobby, will be sent to our troops overseas to make them a little more comfortable.

Happy birthday to three of Riley’s finest, Emily Chizever who celebrated Jan. 22; Troy Sidik, Jan. 28; and Terry Messina, Jan. 30.

The Zizzo family has two birthdays in their family this week: Dad Phil celebrated Jan. 24 and daughter Lauren celebrates her 29th today, Thursday, Jan. 27. Lauren and her family are so excited about Lauren’s and Robert’s upcoming wedding this September. Best wishes to you both.

A very happy wedding anniversary to Gail and Bill Kappenberg, who celebrated Jan. 25, from all your family and friends. We hope you had a perfect day. Congratulations.

It’s time to pick some forsythia. Go outside, snap off some branches of these yellow-bell bushes, put them in water and spring will arrive in a week or so in your home. Pussy willows work well, too, so get snappin’.

Have a great week, be safe and I shall talk to you soon. Take care, bye.
