A 38-year-old Northampton man was arrested on assault charges early Saturday after State Troopers broke up a fight at a gas station near the Route 24 traffic circle in Riverside, authorities said.

State Police were made aware of the brawl by a woman who walked into the Riverside barracks and alerted them of a fight at the Shell Gas Station on nearby Lake Avenue, officials said.

Responding troopers broke up the altercation and soon discovered the two men had been drinking at a local bar together before ending up at the Shell, police said.

During the argument, Mark Goode of Wildwood Trail, repeatedly punched the other man, breaking bones in the victim’s face, police said.

Mr. Goode was arrested and is facing a second-degree assault charge, a felony.

He is being held at the Suffolk County jail on $2,500 cash bail or $5,000 bond, officials said.
