Irma Maas

Irma Maas of Riverhead died at the Hamptons Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in Southampton on Feb. 10. She was 88.

Born in Germany to Theodor and Sophie Froehling on March 26, 1922, she married Walter Maas in College Point, Queens, in 1941. The couple raised their family in West Islip.

A resident of Riverhead for about 25 years, Ms. Maas was a homemaker and active member of Baiting Hollow Congregational Church, where she helped with church fundraisers and worked in the thrift shop, according to her daughter-in-law, Karen Maas.

Predeceased by her son Walter, she is survived by her husband, her son Kenneth, of Missouri, seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours were Feb. 13 at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. Funeral services were held Feb. 14 at the funeral home, with Pastor E. Stan Knavel of Baiting Hollow Congregational Church officiating. Interment was at Calverton National Cemetery.
